Reading and Phonics
At Pendragon Primary School, we are committed to nurturing confident and enthusiastic readers through our comprehensive approach to reading. Using the Little Wandle Revised Letters and Sounds Phonics scheme, we build strong foundational reading skills from the start. We are passionate about children's love for reading and promote comtempory and classic texts through assemblies, class readers and reccomended reads. Our children have access to a fully stocked library where they can select books of their choice. Together, these ensure every child has the tools to succeed and develop a lifelong love of reading.
Writing
In Reception, the development of writing is rooted in children's natural desire to communicate, imagine and represent theor ideas. Drawing Club is used to support this process, provding a meaningful and engagning bridge between spoken lanigague, mark making and early wriitng. For Years 1 to 6 our writing curriculum has been designed using Grammarsaurus as the foundation for teaching and learning. This approach ensures a clear, structured progression in the development of writing skills across the year groups. Grammarsaurus resources are used to support the explicit teaching of grammar, punctuation, and composition, enabling pupils to understand how language works and how to apply this knowledge effectively in their writing. Lessons are carefully sequenced to build on prior learning, providing pupils with opportunities to practise, refine, and apply their skills across a range of genres and purposes. Teachers adapt Grammarsaurus materials to meet the needs of their class, using them as a flexible starting point. This approach enables us to maintain high expectations while tailoring lessons to support and challenge all learners. This consistent, whole-school approach supports high expectations for writing and ensures that pupils develop confidence, creativity, and accuracy as writers.
KS2 spelling is taught using Spelling Shed, this structured approach provides pupils with regular, progressive spelling instruction that aligns with the national curriculum expectations. Teachers use Spelling Shed to deliver engaging lessons,s et weekly spelling assignments, and provide opportunties fr pupils to practise and apply spellig rules both in school and at home.
